Training: Data Analysis

Training course goal
Obtaining the competences necessary to work with a spreadsheet at an intermediate level. After completing the training, the participant is able to use formulas and functions in the field of spreadsheet (MS Excel): 
Use formulas and functions when performing calculations, including statistical calculations, import, organize and analyze data, using, among others, data validation, pivot tables and advanced charts.


Recipiens of the training course

The training is addressed to: people interested in improving their professional competences in the use of MS Excel. Students and graduates of the Lodz University of Technology are welcome. Number of people

Training course programme - main thematic areas of the training
Use a spreadsheet to manipulate formulas and functions, including statistical functions, nesting functions, use of charts, pivot tables, and basic data analysis. Perform common spreadsheet tasks.

The course is carried out in a computer lab with a multimedia projector and is based on the Excel version of Microsoft Office 2010 PL.

Planned schedule of classes:
1. Repeating the basics of MS Excel:
• entering, modifying, and deleting data,
• keyboard shortcuts,
• filling with a series of data,
• application of the Paste Special tool,
• używanie formatowania, malarz formatów,
• formatowanie warunkowe.
2. Formulas and functions
• relative and absolute addressing,
• basic calculation functions,
• logical functions: if & and,
• statistical and logical functions,
• data, text and financial functions,
• search and reference functions,
merging several functions into one – nesting
• formula auditing, detecting errors in formulas,
• use own cell names and ranges,
guidelines and examples for array formulas,
3. Importing, analyzing and searching for data:
• data import,
• sorting – advanced options,
• Autofilter tool,
• non - standard filter,
• unique and duplicate values, counting.
4. Creating and editing plots.
5. Create and work with pivot tables:
• introduction to pivot tables,
• changing the calculation functions in the pivot table,
• grouping data in a pivot table,
• filtering data in a pivot table,
• plots based on pivot tables.
6. Worksheet and workbook protection:
• securing content in a worksheet and workbook,
• checking the correctness of the entered data,
• create and manage drop-down lists.
7. Implementation of exemplary projects, e.g.:
• home budget,
• action schedule (presenting data on a Gantt chart),
• employee attendance list,
• zamówienia w firmie,
• experimental data analysis.

PhD Eng. Krzysztof Smółka (krzysztof.smolka@p.lodz.pl)
Assistant professor at the Institute of Mechatronics and Information Systems at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Computer Science and Automation. He conducts lectures and laboratory classes, among others, in the field of programming methods and languages, databases and artificial intelligence. He has many years of experience in conducting classes as part of subjects, courses and postgraduate studies, e.g.: Postgraduate studies: Integrated database platforms Oracle, SAS, DB2 (3 editions) Postgraduate studies: Designing database applications based on ORACLE, IBM DB2, SQL Server, Java technologies (3 editions) as part of the project Postgraduate technical studies for entrepreneurs and employees of enterprises.
Training course: Integrated database platforms Oracle, SAS, DB2 (3 editions) Trainer in the project "Competence Development Program at the Lodz University of Technology in the area of ​​ICT" in the field of certified training: Programming for scientific purposes and data processing (2018). As regards the use of spreadsheets, he, among others, implemented a contract for the creation of an information base on projects co-financed by the European Union, which was used to monitor projects implemented, completed and planned for implementation by the organizational units of the City of Łódź Office (Partnership and Funds Office).


Course fee:

The cost of participation in the course for one participant is PLN 475. We issue course completion certificates.

Course duration:
Two meetings (each in the form of a one-day convention - 8 hours - lectures, laboratory and workshop classes).

Dates for the course to be agreed depending on the number of applications received, initially planned for 2 Saturdays, 8 hours each. Required documents/recruitment rules: Records by the Secretary of the Institute of Mechatronics and Information Systems of TUL.

Training: Introduction to machine learning

Training goal
After completing the training, the participant:
Has practical knowledge of the basics of programming in Python to the extent needed to implement machine learning algorithms, Can use the learned methods and models of machine learning to solve practical problems.

The course is designed for current or future data scientists who want to start an exciting adventure with machine learning. Students and graduates of the Lodz University of Technology are welcome. Number of people  in the course

Training program - main thematic areas of training

Today's leading companies use machine learning tools to automate decision-making processes. The course is designed for current or future data scientists who want to start an exciting adventure with machine learning. 

The scope of the course covers the following topics: the use of Python for exploratory data analysis, data visualization, selected machine learning algorithms, the use of machine learning classifiers using the scikit-learn library, introduction to deep learning and the TensorFlow library, evaluation of model effectiveness, review of performance metrics.


The course is carried out in a computer lab with a multimedia projector and is based on the use of Python with the Jupyter Notebook tool.
